Can I still eat that chicken I left in the fridge a week ago? Are dried apple chips still safe after two years? Can canned food ever be too old to open?
The Food Clock is a hands-on data visualisation that lets you explore how long different foods last—depending on how they’re stored. Focusing on familiar kitchen staples like fish and potatoes—raw, canned, dried, or refrigerated—it reveals the hidden timelines quietly ticking away in your cupboard. It highlights essential food knowledge that’s often overlooked, yet surprisingly useful in everyday life—not just in times of crisis.
Rotate the plate. It’s time—to find out when it’s better not to eat that chicken.
Project developed in collaboration with Krisjanis Rijnieks, who was responsible for mechanical design, electronics and digital fabrication.
The project was inaugurated at VK25 – Visualizing Knowledge Conference, held at Aalto University in June 2025.
